Not following the basic instructions

Nothing is more annoying than a candidate who ignores the basic instructions that have been given. If the advertisement says to email your resume with cover letter and no calls, you better follow it. If you can't follow simple instructions, it's likely that your application will be ignored. By following the instructions, it not only shows you can read, but it also makes clear that you have no problem in following instructions.

Arriving late

There are a million reasons why you could arrive late for the interview, but your hiring manager doesn’t usually care because there are also a million reasons why you could arrive on time. You won’t ruin your first impression by arriving late because it is seen as sloppy and very rude. Try to map out how long it will take you to get to the company’s building before you interview day. Otherwise you can also try to do a test driving to locate the company’s building in advance.

Not dressing appropiately

There is a prejudice against people who don’t dress appropriately for the interview. As if you can't dress appropriately for an interview then you can't dress appropriately for work. Avoid wearing clothes that make you look disheveled because it will make you unprofessional. But, be careful not to overdo it too. It will be better if you’ve prepared your interview outfit before the morning of your interview so you don’t get any last minute surprise. Remember to be mindful of what you wear.

Being unpreprared

Wasting time is definitely a turn off for the hiring manager, and you will be seen as a waste of time if you don't put any effort to do research you need for the interview. Hiring managers want to know that you want that particular role and have worked hard to try and earn it. A candidate who has not researched the company, its goals, and the role that he apply for, will seem like he doesn’t have any passion for or genuinely interested in the company. Doing your research and being prepared to talk about the company you are applying to and the position you are applying for are essential.

You don’t listen and ask questions

It can be very tempting to promote yourself as much as possible. But don’t let this temptation make you keep talking and not listening to what the hiring manager says. It might happen due to nerves but remember that being chatty could annoy the hiring manager. You can be considered as a distraction at works and difficult to manage. Not to mention that you don’t bother to ask questions afterwards. Not asking any questions can be very dangerous thing to do during a job interview because it shows disinterest and lack of effort.
